We will only start taking applications when the next election has been called and we ONLY accept applications made through this website so please do not phone or write to us looking for work. Please note that we do not carry applications forward from one election to the next so if you applied for work at the last election and were not offered a job then you will need to re-apply whenever the next election is announced. Please check this website from time to time as we will make an announcement here whenever applications are being accepted again.

Dublin West Bye-Election: Information for Candidates

Prospective candidates may obtain nomination papers from our office during normal business hours or may download nomination papers here:

A person may nominate himself/herself as a candidate or may, with his/her consent, be nominated by a proposer who is registered as a Dáil elector in the constituency.

A nomination paper from a candidate of a registered political party must have a certificate of political affiliation attached.

If no certificate is attached, the candidate must, before the latest time for receiving nominations, either-

secure 30 assents to the nomination by way of statutory declarations by Dáil electors registered in the constituency (forms available from this office or the registration authority), or
make a deposit of €500 (deposit may also be made on the candidate’s behalf).

Details of these requirements are set out in the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2007.

The latest time for receiving nominations is 12 noon on the 12th day of October, 2011.

A nominated candidate may withdraw his/her nomination at any time up to 12 noon on the 13th day of October, 2011.

Candidates should contact this office by telephone at 01-8306785 to arrange an appointment to lodge their application.

Notices of Poll

The Presidential Election will take place on the 27th day of October between the hours of 7.00am and 10.00pm. The formal notice of poll for each constituenct may be viewed by clicking on the "Presidential and Referendums 2011" item in the menu at the left hand side of this page.

Referendums will be taken on the proposals contained in the Twenty-Ninth Amendment of the Constitution (Judges Pay) Bill 2011 and the Thirtieth Amendment of the Constitution (Houses of the Oireachtas Inquiries) Bill 2011 on the 27th Day of October between the hours of 7.00am and 10.00pm. Copies of the bills may be inspected or obtained free of charge at any post office. The official "Notice of the taking of a Referendum" for each constituency can be viewed by clicking on the "Presidential and Referendums 2011" item in the menu at the left hand side of this page.

Are you on the Register of Electors?

All Irish citizens over the age of 18 are entitled to vote at the Presidential Election but only if they are on the Register of Electors for their area. The Register of Electors is maintained by the relevant Local Authority and it is important to make sure that you are on the register for your area. You should verify this even if you have voted in previous elections since errors do occasionally happen and could prevent you being able to cast your vote.

You can check the register online at CheckTheRegister.ie where it will only take a minute to make sure you are registered.

People who are eligible to vote but who are not registered as electors still have time to apply for entry in the supplement to the register of electors to be published before polling day and so be able to vote on 27 October 2011. Application forms can be downloaded from www.checktheregister.ie or can be obtained from City and County Councils. To be eligible for inclusion in the supplement to the register a person must be an Irish citizen, must be 18 years of age by polling day and must be ordinarily resident in the State.

Applications for inclusion in the supplement must be signed in the presence of and witnessed by a member of the Garda Siochana or, if the person cannot attend their local Garda Station, by an official of their County or City Council provided they state the reason why they were unable to attend a Garda station. If, because of a physical illness or physical disability, a person cannot attend either their local Garda Station or their County or City Council, their application form must be accompanied by a medical certificate. The final date for the receipt of completed supplement application forms by the relevant City or County Council is 10 October 2011.
